A Four Directions Meditation

Find a quiet place to sit. Do your best to slow down your thoughts and be open to the wisdom the four directions have for you.

Consider the West (the setting sun) and the color black.

Eagles fly to the west. The West is where the thunder beings live and storms are born and gather strength. Notice the storms that seem to be brewing in your life. Notice the sources of light in your life that may be fading (perhaps a relationship that is coming to an end or reduced energy due to illness). Take comfort that when you notice a coming storm, you can better deal with it.

Consider the North (midnight) and the color red.

The North is where hard times reside. Observe the problems and obstacles in your life with courage. Your situation is what it is. It is hard to remember that there are other directions and that these hard times will pass. The sun will rise again, it always does.

Consider the East (the rising sun) and the color yellow.

This is where you find the sacred buffalo and where possibility and wisdom are born. Observe the good things that are growing in your life (a better mood, endurance in exercise, perhaps the number of days in your sobriety) with gratitude. Then think of small (doable in one day) things that you are willing to commit to doing today to increase the positives in your life, like a half hour of exercise or visiting with a trusted friend.

Finally, consider the South (the noontime sun) and the color white.

The South is warm and a place of plenty. The birds in their wisdom fly here to escape the cold. Think of what is good in your life and any people who have helped you get through tough times to reach this day. Give thanks for what blessings that you have. Visualize what your life may look like in the future if you continue doing positive activities to help yourself and the important others in your life.

Now begin your day again.
